After indulging in a garlic bagel or curry, it’s understandable to have temporary bad breath. However, if your breath is constantly a concern, you may be dealing with something more. In most cases, bad breath originates from the gums and tongue. Instead of chewing on breath mints and hoping for the best, we’re sharing three ways to combat bad breath.
1. Keep Saliva Flowing
Did you know saliva helps cleanse your mouth by removing particles that cause bad odors? Particles left over in the mouth like food or other bacteria produce sulfur compounds. By keeping salvia flowing, you’re constantly washing away these compounds that could build up to cause bad breath.
One way to do this is by chewing sugar-free gum or sucking sugar-free candies. Drinking fluids, especially water, is also one of the best ways to cleanse your mouth of particles that can cause bad breath.
2. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene
Most of the time, the cause of bad breath is how you care for your smile. Ideally, you should brush twice a day and floss after every meal. However, with busy schedules and being on the go, our team knows that is not always possible.
Maintaining good oral hygiene, like brushing and flossing, is the best way to combat bad breath. But when not possible, always remember there is mouthwash!
3. Visit Your Dentist Regularly
If you have bad breath, ask yourself the last time you went to the dentist. Regular dental visits allow your dental team to detect dental problems that may cause bad breath. This can include anything from gum disease to severe dental decay, which may need restorative care.
