Kids start getting their baby teeth at about age 1, which is when they should start seeing a dentist! Routine cleanings, exams, and other services ensure your child has healthy tooth development. When a child is comfortable going to the dentist, they’re more likely to continue seeking care as an adult. What should you know about dental services for kids?
Preventative Dentistry
Like adults, kids should visit a dentist for cleanings and exams at least twice a year. During a routine appointment, we’ll clean away plaque and tartar, polish and floss the teeth, and check for issues like cavities. We can also provide tips on good brushing and flossing at home. Kids usually start brushing and flossing on their own around 5-6 years old, but parents should watch to make sure they’re cleaning their teeth well enough.
Restorative Dentistry
Kids are more vulnerable to tooth decay than adults. It’s often because kids are still learning to brush and floss their teeth. Baby teeth also have thinner enamel, which makes them more susceptible to cavities. Kids should get cavities treated before they grow larger and cause serious problems.
Mouthguards
Mouthguards are essential for kids who play sports, skateboard, snowboard, or rollerblade. A mouthguard prevents injuries like knocked-out teeth, cut tongues and lips, broken teeth, and more. You can buy mouthguards at sports equipment stores, but a custom mouthguard from a dentist will last longer and fit significantly better.
Dental Sedation
Does your child have dental anxiety? We offer nitrous oxide, which is also called “laughing gas.” This is a mild, safe sedative that’s perfect for anxious kids. During the appointment, we’ll place a mask over the child’s nose. As they inhale the gas, they’ll feel calm and relaxed. Once we remove the mask, it only takes a few minutes for the effects to wear off.
