Oral Health Tips for Seniors

Elderly oral care

As we get older, it becomes increasingly important for us to keep our minds and bodies in good shape. It’s especially important to care for our teeth and gums, as they not only allow us to eat, talk, and smile, but they impact our overall health. Here are some easy ways to keep your smile healthy as you get older!

Eat a Healthy Diet

Diet plays a major role in our oral health. Having a diet that is rich in protein, fiber, and calcium will help fortify your teeth and keep bad bacteria at bay. Cheese and dairy, leafy greens, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean meats can all support healthy teeth. Limiting sugar, starches, and acidic foods such as sticky candies, desserts, and citrus will also serve your teeth well, as they all can wear down the enamel and expedite decay.

Brush & Floss Every Day

Brushing and flossing twice a day every day is the best way to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as can be. Many seniors suffer from gum disease and tooth loss because of poor habits and neglect, but you don’t have to be one of them! Use a toothbrush with soft bristles or an electric toothbrush to make the brushing process easier and gentler. We also recommend that you use an interdental device like a floss pick to clean between your teeth if traditional floss is too difficult to handle.

Stop Smoking & Drinking

Smoking suppresses your immunity and can do widespread damage all over your body. Because it heightens the effect of bad bacteria on your teeth and causes dry mouth, you’re more likely to develop tooth decay if you’re a smoker. Moreover, alcohol is highly acidic and will damage your teeth over time.

It’s easy to avoid seeing your doctor or dentist as you get older, but it’s especially important to see your dentist twice a year when you’re a senior. Dr. Marshall will detect any early stages of oral health issues and provide you with a tailored plan to address any existing issues that you may have.
