River Vista Dentistry offers both custom athletic mouthguards and custom nightguards for bruxism, or teeth clenching and grinding. Wearing a high-quality oral appliance like a custom mouthguard can make a world of a difference when it comes to preventing dental trauma, so we always encourage patients to invest in a custom mouthguard if we believe it’s necessary to protect their teeth. What are the benefits of custom mouthguards?
While custom mouthguards take longer to receive than one-size mouthguards that you can purchase at the store, we believe that custom mouthguards are still a great investment for many patients. Since they are molded to fit the exact shape of your teeth, they tend to be more comfortable to wear, even for many hours at a time. In our experience, patients are far more likely to wear mouthguards that are comfortable, meaning the teeth are protected more often. Our mouthguards are also highly durable and tend to last several years before needing to be replaced.

What is the process for receiving a custom mouthguard?
Once you’ve decided to protect your teeth by using a custom mouthguard, the first step involves taking impressions of your smile. This can be done at the end of a routine dental visit or we can schedule a short appointment for you. Your impressions will be sent to an off-site lab and used to create your custom oral appliance. Once we receive your mouthguard, another quick visit will need to be scheduled where we will have you try it on. Adjustments can be made to ensure that it fits perfectly, and then you can take it home with you!
How will I know if I need a mouthguard?
If you’re involved in aggressive contact sports, like football, basketball, or martial arts, a custom mouthguard is an excellent preventive service for you. It’s not as easy to tell if a custom nightguard is needed, but if someone in your household hears you grinding your teeth at night or you routinely wake up with a sore jaw or face pain, we recommend discussing it with our team. We can also look at your teeth and gums to see if there are any signs of bruxism. Want to learn more about our custom mouthguard services? Feel free to contact our office.
