What Are Dental Crowns?
Crowns, also known as dental caps, are a tooth-shaped restoration that covers your existing tooth. They can be made out of a variety of materials such as ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, metal alloys, and more. The type you choose depends on the reason you need the crown and your budget. Dr. Marshall has extensive experience in placing crowns and will help determine if a crown is right for you.
The Purpose of Crowns
- Covering Cracks & Chips
- Permanently Altering a Tooth’s Appearance
- Protecting a Tooth with a Large Filling
- Strengthening a Tooth After a Root Canal
The Dental Crown Process
Before a crown can be placed, the tooth must be shaved down to make room for it. Once the tooth is prepared, our team will take impressions and send them to an off-site lab. There, they will create your custom crown to match the shape and the color of your other teeth so it blends in seamlessly. Once we get your crown in, we’ll permanently cement it to your tooth and before you know it, you’ll be able to get back to enjoying life with a fully functioning smile!
Dental Crowns For Tooth Replacement
Did you know that dental crowns are also used for tooth replacement? Our practice provides restoration services for patients with dental implants and uses dental crowns for single tooth replacement. A dental implant is a small titanium post that acts as a replacement tooth root. With the help of an abutment, we can attach a beautiful, natural-looking dental crown to your implant.
Are dental crown treatments painful?
Dental crown procedures are not painful because a local anesthetic is always applied near the affected tooth to completely numb it. You may feel a little discomfort after the numbness wears off, but it shouldn’t be anything that an over-the-counter pain medication can’t relieve. If you are nervous about your appointment, River Vista Dentistry offers relaxing sedation options including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation that can help reduce dental anxiety and make your dental crown treatment feel like a breeze.
How long do dental crowns last?
Dental crowns typically last for around 10 to 15 years, but they can last even longer when treated with care. We recommend scheduling routine cleanings and exams with our team at least twice per year and practicing good oral hygiene at home to help your dental crown last for as long as possible. You will also want to avoid chewing ice or hard candy or using your teeth to open packages, as these habits can damage dental crowns in the same way that they can damage natural teeth.
Are dental crowns covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans offer full or partial coverage for dental crown procedures. If you don’t have dental insurance, River Vista Dentistry offers a 15% discount on restorative treatments like dental crowns. We also accept payment plans through CareCredit, which can break up the upfront cost of dental crown treatments into monthly payments. We want to ensure our affordable dental crowns are available to patients who need them, so if financing your dental crown treatment is a concern for you, please get in touch with our team and we will be happy to assist.
